Rank and organization: Corporal, Company L, 8th U.S. Cavalry. Place and date: At Hell Canyon, Ariz., 3 July 1869. Entered service at: ------. Birth: Ireland. Date of issue: 3 March 1870. Citation: Gallantry in action.

Corporal John Mitchell was one of three members of the 8th U.S. Cavalry cited simply for "gallantry in action" during an engagement with hostile Indian forces at Hell Canyon, Arizona, on July 3, 1869. His two comrades who were also cited in this action were First Sergeant Sanford Bradbury and Corporal Paul Haupt .
