Oscar Micheaux, author and prolific film maker, was one of the very few African-American pioneers that homesteaded in Gregory County, SD. His original homestead house and outbuildings can still be visited a couple miles from Gregory. He was a pioneer farmer here from 1905 through 1912, before going on to Hollywood and worldwide acclaim. The mural comemmorates the Gregory County's Centennial (1898 - 1998). Don't miss taking the time to venture out to this historic homestead site N 43 11.017 W 99 23.666; Oscar wrote "The Homesteader" here, which he later made into a movie.
