This peak was named after Colonel James Baker (1820 - 1906), who had purchased Galbraith's ranch at Joseph's Prairie, upon which Cranbrook was later built. At one time Col. Baker was president of the Crows Nest Pass Coal Company. Baker represented the Kootenay riding in the provincial legislature 1886 - 1890, and following the division of the riding into east and west, represented Kootenay East from 1890 - 1897.
