In New Orleans, along Lakeshore Drive that runs by Lake Pontchartrain, is a concrete sidewalk with a survey disk embedded in a curb right by the lake. This mark is a triangulation station disk, which survived both the ravages of Hurricane Katrina, and the construction to repair the damage afterwards (2005-2007).
To get to the disk, from the rotary at the junction of Lakeshore Drive and Elysian Fields Avenue, travel west on Lakeshore Drive to a bend in the road by the lake shore, where there is a white building and some picnic tables on the left. Park anywhere in this area, and head for the water. The marker is within sight of the white building, at the water's edge, and is currently ringed with yellow paint.
The marker is in fair to good condition. There are many gouges on the surface, which make wording harder to read.
The text is as follows. Along the inside edge of the marker is the text, "U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey Triangulation Station." Inside this text is the usual directions for more more information and warnings about disturbing the marker. At the center is a triangle with a circle. Above the triangle is the word, "DODGE." Below that is the year "1931."
When you walk by, don't be surprised when you might get some spray blown your way!
