Long Description:
In New Orleans, along Lake Pontchartrain, is Lakeshore Drive, with a sidewalk running between the road and the lake. Along the concrete curb that defines the shoreline, is a survey disk that has an arrow embossed in the middle that identifies it as a reference disk.
To get there, from the rotary with Elysian Fields Avenue at Lakeshore Drive, travel west on Lakeshore Drive to a curve in the road where there is a white building on the left and picnic tables, and the lake on the right. Park in a parking spot, and walk along the walkway and the mark.
The mark is set in the concrete curb at the level of the sidewalk, and approximately 3 feet above the water level.
The marker is in fair condition with a very pitted face that is barely readable. The marker has the following. Along the inside edge of the marker is, "U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey - Reference Mark." Inside this are the usual words of warning. In the center of the disk is an arrow pointing east (right) toward the main mark. Above the arrow is the word, "DODGE" and possibly "REF" just under it. Below the arrow is the year, "1931."
