Jack O’ Legs was a hermit living around Weston and Graveley and a giant of a man. He was a consummate archer, allegedly being able to shoot an arrow over three miles. In addition to his size and prowess with a bow, he was also a thief who distributed his ill gotten gains to the poor. This led to some notoriety and to his undoing.

Jack's activities had upset a band of wealthy bakers and millers in nearby Baldock and they decided to get rid of him. They waited in ambush for Jack and attacked him from behind. Fearing his giant strength they broke his skull and burned out his eyes with a poker. Just as they were about to hang Jack he regained consciousness. He made a last request that he shoot a final arrow and that he be buried wherever the arrow landed. The legend has it that the arrow flew several miles to Weston churchyard where, it is believed, he is buried. Just through the gates of Weston churchyard is a plaque indicating the site of Jack’s grave. The grave itself is marked out by two stones, well over eight feet apart, which show where his head and feet are. Legend or just a tall tale, there is an area on the road between Graveley and Weston still known to this day as Jack’s Hill.
