There is a "first sign" under the porch and attached to the wall of Aunt Charlotte's Candies. The marker is attractive, colorful and written in script. The first mechanical equipment used by this historic company was a cooker, of all things.

The cooker was used early on in the history of the company for about 50 years before it was retired and out on display out front on the porch, where it is still today. The first sign is located directly in back of it and can only be seen if right up on the porch.

The "first" sign reads:

Caramel & Fudge Cooker

First mechanical equipment used by founder C.B. Oakford, Sr. In operation from 1925 to 1975, this machine was used for our very first product-hand wrapped caramels.

Aunt Charlotte's Candies is located at 5 West Maple Avenue, in the historic district of town. Its left side borders Morissey Park. The building currently occupied by the candy company was previously owned by a grain and feed company. In the 1960's after Beideman's feed store had long since passed, Aunt Jean's Luncheonette occupied the building and was a popular spot for school children. 1971 saw the transformation of the building into Aunt Charlotte's Candies by Brooks Oakford. Aunt Charlotte's, operating in Merchantville for over 80 years, had previously been on Centre Street.
