Dr. James Naismith invented the sport of basketball in 1891 and wrote the original basketball rulebook. He founded the University of Kansas basketball program. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame carries his name. Dr. Naismith died November 28, 1939 and is buried in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence, Kansas. This memorial to Dr. Naismith stands near the entrance to Memorial Park Cemetery. The memorial is located in a small well maintained plaza near the cemetery office. This monument should NOT be confused with Dr. Naismith’s gravesite which is located a short distance away. Dr. Naismith's gravesite can be found at waymark WM87AE - 38° 57.238 - 095° 12.941
