In the 1980's, this section of Crown Street Wollongong was closed to vehicular traffic and made into a pedestrian mall. The amphitheatre was constructed as a part of this redevelopment and is controlled by the local council and the management of the Crown St Mall.
The amphitheatre has a sail type of enclosing shell and is fitted with all necessary equipment for any number of events requiring a prominent outdoor stage in Wollongong.
