The sculpture is located between the UIC Department of Biochemistry and the College of Dentistry.

I first learned of the sculpture from CLTV's site:
(visit link)

(and was happy to find Symbiotic Parallax also nearby.)

According to (visit link)
it is made of granite and stands 16 feet tall and weights approximately 100 tons.

Pretty massive!

Definitions of allele:
1. (genetics) - either of a pair (or series) of alternative forms of a gene that can occupy the same locus on a particular chromosome and that control the same character
2. (music) - an American Alternative metal band from Jacksonville, Florida, formed in 2002
I think this sculpture probably pertains to the former.
