Sisaket, is a small and quiet town, which lies >500kms north east of Bangkok. As one of its few tourist attractions the town possess a small zoo. This zoo lies 4km west from the town centre, and is part of a royal recreation park, with walks and cultural sites. The park is named in honour of the king of Thailand, Rama IX.

The zoo itself is well designed and presented. I visited on a Saturday afternoon, and both the zoo and park were filled with locals out for the day, with kids, wives, grandparents, and picnic baskets in tow. Most of the animals in the zoo are indigenous to the region, but there non-indigs such as ostriches and hippos, and even a few bemused reindeer wondering why it is so hot. A pleasant afternoon visit.

As the zoo is in one of the remote provinces of Thailand, there are only a few locals whose command of the Queen's English extends beyond "Hello, where you come from?", and there are no English language signs in evidence. So expect to navigate without a great deal of external assistance, for people to photograph you, and for children to stare (that is, if you happen to be a westerner, a farlang).

The cost of entry was 15baht for a foreigner (~30c), and 10 baht for a local (~1/2 hour salary). The zoo is open from 8.00-18.00.
