This solemn yet majestic memorial stands on the shores of Lake Superior, along the three mile Lakewalk in Duluth, MN. The Lakewalk is a boardwalk that follows the shoreline of Lake Superior and the City of Duluth through the downtown and scenic area. The Lakewalk also has a paved bike trail.
This monument, the Northland Vietnam Veteran's Memorial was dedicated on May 30, 1992. The design of the memorial is a wall type granite marker and a half dome. The dome is looking out to the lake area and in fact serves as a barrier and viewing point for watching the waves crash into shore, especially during the gales of November and on other stormy days. There are benches and viewing windows on the lake side. Toward the city side is the engraved wall.
This is a place for meditation and healing. As the sun rises over Lake Superior, each name on the wall is illuminated. As the sun sets a beacon is aimed sky-ward much like the flashlight of a lost soldier showing our veterans the way home.
This is truly a majestic and touching memorial. It is a place for all to meditate, reflect and enjoy the serenty of the monument and the setting.
