The first crude oil in Canada was discovered and commercialized in Oil Springs in 1858. Refineries to process the crude into lamp oil were initially located in Hamilton, London and Petrolia however as local crude ran out and increasing quantities of imported crude oil were needed the refining centre moved to Sarnia and the transportation offered by the St Clair river.
Now connected by pipelines to Alberta, the Gulf Coast and the East Coast of Canada and the US, Sarnia has become the major refining and petrochemical centre in Ontario
