The district consists of all or part of 33 blocks roughly bounded by Market, McAllister, Golden Gate, Larkin, Geary, Taylor, Ellis Sts. Many of the contributing buildings in the district are former hotels. They dates back from the 1910s and 1920s, when they were luxury hotels. Now the hotels have been turned into halfways houses and low income housing.
