This playground is divided up into three sections with a swing set in the middle. The playground is new and the park was saved and rehabbed in the last couple of years. It is a beautiful jewel in the Frankford section of northeast Philadelphia.

The playground is the typical colorful, plastic, pre-fabricated version with slides, crawling places, climbing places and jumping places. The dual slides are actually metal. There is a separate swing set and a lot of places to climb, separate from the main playground

Gambrel Recreational Center was recently saved a few years ago. Featured are basketball courts, football and baseball fields, this playground, swings, field house, splash fountains, benches, water fountains, parking and other nice amenities.

Over its 46 years, the recreation center suffered through urban blight and lack of funds. Gambrel Field was littered with rocks and glass, the goalposts were lopsided three-inch plumbing pipes, and the turf was creased with the deep treads of trespassing all-terrain vehicles. The renewal came with the help of the Philadelphia Eagles.

And so, the Frankford community (a non-incorporated part of northeast Philadelphia) residents recently celebrated the grand opening of Gambrel’s of this new Playground and Spray Park and rec center at the Gambrel recreation center at 1900 Wakeling Street. This is located at the Gambrel field complex.
