At one point, this highway was named the Jefferson Davis Memorial Highway. This marker was erected in 1943 by the Daughters of the Confederacy. It was vandalized and eventually moved to its current location, fairly unnoticed. While Jefferson Davis is best known for his service as the President of the Confederacy, he also served the US Military prior to the Civil War, fighting in the Mexican-American War as a colonel of a volunteer regiment.
