This tall granite memorial was placed by The Burma Star Association and includes their star as it appears in the Burma Star medals. It is in its own fenced area with gates and memorial plaques around its perimeter.
Upon the memorial is the famous Kohima Epitaph:
'When you go home, tell them of us and say,
for your tomorrow we gave our today.'
In 1951 The Burma Star Association was formed for the World War II Veterans with the Burma Campaign Star or the Pacific Star with Burma Clasp. Even today there are approximately 6000 members encompassing Veterans, widows and children/dependants.
The end of the war in the Far East only came with the determination of the million men in the Fourteenth Army also known as 'The Forgotten Army' which was the largest Commonwealth Army ever assembled. In the Battle of Kohima Japanese and British armies fought fiercely, separated only by the tennis court of the British administrator in Burma. The memorial we see here in the arboretum is a replica of the one at the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Kohima.
