This cairn was constructed during Australia's bicentennial year (1988) to mark the geographical centre of the state of New South Wales, Australia.
While there are a number of ways to calculate the geographical centre of a state, this point is accepted as the centre of NSW. The point is referenced on Geoscience Australia's website: (

The cairn is located in the NSW outback 42km drive West of the small farming town of Tottenham and is just off the dirt road. The cairn was constructed using slag from the local copper mines.
The point is 435km NW of Sydney.
