In early 1800's Richard Rowe moved into in a large recess cave in southern Ohio that is now called Old Man's Cave. Today, his home has become the center of Hocking Hills State Park, one of the most popular state parks in Ohio, with millions of visitors a year. This wild hermit's home is now the location of the visitor center, with a gift and snack shop, and a modern campground with a swimming pool.
The gorge trail is approximately 1/2 mile long. There are four different sets of stairs that lead into the gorge. To see the entire length of the gorge, start at the east end, where you will find the Upper Falls.
The Lower Falls are about 30 feet high. To reach the Lower Falls, hike past Old Man's Cave and the Sphinx Head, then continue for about 0.2 miles. Like all the creeks in the area, this one gets pretty thin in summer.
