The courthouse was built in the 1850s. In the 1970s it was extended to connect the courthouse with the hall of records. It was built by architects Samuel and Joseph Newsom of San Francisco and Ira Gilchrist of Napa.
Currently probate, family law and general civil, as well as most juvenile are heard here. Across the street is a newer, modern courthouse.
Around the plaza are benches and a historic grounding stone. There's also a small rose garden.
