Along the Wissahickon Creek there was once many different mills, the Keefe-Mumbower Mill is the sole survivor. Dating to the early 1800s the mill is not the first on the site as records indicated that Abraham Evans built a saw mill and fulling mill on the site in 1745. This mill was demolished and a new mill built in the late 1700s. The present building has a date stone of 1835 but it is not confirmed whether this was for new construction, modification or new ownership. The mill was acquired by Henry Mumbower in 1858, and a members of the Mumbower family operated the grist mill until around 1930. Over the years the mills technology changed from a waterwheel to steam powered and to gasoline powered.

After the mill closed it sat vacant and abandoned for many years and deteriorated over the years. In 1984 the Towamencin Historical Society acquired the mill and initiated repairs. In 1987 ownership passed to the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association, which has continued the repair and restoration work on the mill.

The mill was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

The mill is open for tours on the third Sunday each month during the spring, summer and fall from 1 pm to 4 pm.
