Jimmy Appleton Memorial, Ipswich, MA - Citizen Memorials on Waymarking.com

The Appletons, owners of and residents at Appleton Farms, were a long established, prominent family in Ipswich. After their son James died of leukemia, they gave this memorial to the town in his memory. The inscription is a quotation from Longfellow's "Killed at the Ford", written ca 1864. It reads as follows:
In memory of
JAMES APPLETON
1899 - 1915

--- the beautiful youth
The heart of honor the tongue of truth
He the life and light of us all
Whose voice was blithe as a bugle call
Whom all eyes followed with one consent
The cheer of whose laugh and whose pleasant word
Hushed all murmurs of discontent

Beneath the inscription there is a "bubbler" fountain (non-operational), and on its base are lines found on an old fountain at Shanklin, Isle of Wight:

Drink of This Fountain
Pure and Sweet.
It Flows for the Rich and Poor the Same,
The Cup of Water
In His Name.

A few feet in front of the memorial there is a watering trough for horses. It is now a planter. At the "Farms", Jimmy's Barn is also named in his memory.
