In 1935, during the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the WPA (Works Progress Administration - later renamed Work Projects Administration), to provide employment for the thousands of impoverished unemployed in the U.S. Thousands of projects were completed during the years 1935 to 1943 and the WPA employed over 93,000 Oklahomans alone.
The rock wall on the east and south sides of Gracelawn Cemetery on Danforth was completed in 1940 as a WPA project. Appearing to have been constructed out of leftovers from other projects (smile) it is extremely unique and fascinating.
