This statue and plaque commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Hashknife Pony Express in Arizona. This pony express travels for 200 miles in January from Holbrook to Scottsdale, delivering legal US Mail. Delivering 20,000 first class letters, led by members of the Navajo County Hashknife Sheriff's Posse. The Hashknife Pony Express is the oldest officially sanctioned Pony Express in the world and has the longest standing contract with the U.S. Postal Service to carry the mail.
More than two dozen riders in authentic cowboy clothing carry the mail, relaying the bags along the route. The arrival of the Hashknife Pony Express in Scottsdale kicks off the annual Parada del Sol. This event is the oldest officially sanctioned Pony Express in the world. Each rider is sworn in as an honorary mail messenger braving weather, terrain, and modern-day obstacles to deliver the United States mail. Their trail through Scottsdale is marked by small signs. The letters are hand stamped with the official ride logo. This is coveted by stamp collectors around the world.
The statue, Passing the Legacy, depicts a vintage pony express rider and a contemporary Hashknife Pony Express rider handing off the mail at full gallop, encapsulating the “Old West” meeting the “New West” in downtown Scottsdale.
