Harzkornmagazin

Harz Mountain Granary

The higher parts of the Harz Mountains are not suitable for aggriculture, but many workers in the mines and metallurgy needed sustenance in form of bread. To ensure enough grains were availlable huge granaries for storage were built and the wheat and rye was sold to reasonable prices to the workers. This granary was errected between 1719 and 1722.
Since 1989 the baroque profane building is used as the New City Hall of Osterode am Harz.

The gable is adorned by a unicorn and a crowned lion who keep watch over a sand stone engraving of the order of the garter.
