Jasper National Park was established in 1907. It is the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies with over 10,878 square kilometres of mountain wilderness. This park is the largest and most northerly Canadian Rocky Mountain national park, part of a spectacular World Heritage Site.

A former Hudson Bay fur trade post was located east of the current Jasper town site. First built in 1813, the post was commanded by Jasper Hawes in 1817 when it became known as “Jasper’s House” to avoid confusion with Rocky Mountain House on the Saskatchewan to the south west of Red Deer. With a decline in use of the Athabasca Pass by mid-century which resulted in decreasing traffic and a decline in use and upkeep of this fur trade post.
