Cages were used in small towns to imprison drunks and other minor felons for short periods of time.
The Cage at Buntingford is of early 18th century design. The roof was renewed in the mid 19th century. The cage is built from red brick in English bond with the tops of the walls in Flemish bond. The gables of the building are in dark weatherboarding and the boarded roof is covered in sheet iron. On the South side of the building there is a recessed, battened and framed door with decorative iron hinges
The Cage was renovated in 1999 by the Town Council and the Civic Society, and bears a blue plaque on the side wall and a brass plaque on the front wall.
