This monument to the Merchant Marine is one of the more attractive monuments at this location. It is a generic monument to those who served in the Merchant Marines.
It has special meaning to me since my grandfather was a Merchant Marine for decades. He served during World War II, crossing the Atlantic in convoys, later on board a submarine, eventually in command of his own vessels. He was honored by a foreign government in an official recommendation to the US government for his work in the daring rescue of sailors in one of the more famous maritime shipwrecks.
God bless the men (and now women) who go down to the sea in ships.
