This Octogon House was designated as a Will County Historical Landmark in January of 2010. The link listed below provides the following information:

This landmark is associated with Wilmington’s first settlers including Thomas and Martha Cox, Dr. Albert W. Bowen, William Chatfield, James Alden, Hiram Alden and David and Gracie Aldrich, who constructed the house in 1867. The innovative house design reflects Wilmington’s growth and progress.

The octagon house style is rare. In Illinois, it is estimated that there are approximately 36 extant octagon house. Within Will County, this style is even more rare, and the subject nominated landmark is the only known one of its kind existing today. At one time, there was an octagon in Plainfield, but it has been demolished. Often, the architectural features of this house design are Italianate.
