As with any small town, the school will struggle with enrollment and the Lily School was no different. As some of the surrounding towns grew in population, Lily found itself competing with bigger school systems.
With declining population, the school closed in the early 60's and the building was torn down.
The bell and tower were salvaged and put in the Lily Heritage Park. They were donated by Hank and Kay Gabur, local residents.
The park in which the bell and tower set has a picnic shelter and some playground equipment. It is located on Main Street in Lily, SD.
Located in northern Day County, South Dakota, Lily has a population of 18, as of July 2008. A 14% decrease in population from the 2000 census.
It was settled by German, French Canadian, and Norwegian immigrants. The town in not incorporated.
