Grant's Canal

In early 1863 Federal General U.S. Grant dug a canal here connecting the Mississippi River and Lake Providence. This attempt to use bayous and rivers to bypass Vicksburg failed.

Part of the Vicksburg campaign where Grant attempted to create bypasses to the Mississippi River to avoid having to go under the cannons mounted on the bluffs of Vicksburg, MS.
