Since 1891, the world's highest cog railroad has been chugging tourists up Pikes Peak to its summit of 14,110 feet. The three hour and ten minute trip, which includes 30 minutes on the summit, winds through stands of pine and aspen before ascending above treeline and offering stunning views of Colorado.
Worth the trip, but remember to bring a jacket (30-40 degrees colder at the peak) and drinking water (to avoid altitude sickness).
Also be sure to stop by the Garden of the Gods (another 1,000 Place to See... (p. 719-720) which is just minutes away from the COG Railway.
