In the shallow calm quiet waters of the Ohiwa Harbour there is something growing.....oysters. This oyster farm has been here for many years, producing quality oysters and selling them from the roadside shop. They also produce smoked fish and seafood meals to takeaway or eat at the picnic tables overlooking the oyster farm. The oysters, Pacific oysters, are grown on intertidal racks in the harbour waters, marked by poles. You can watch the oysters growing!
Although ponds and tanks can be used for farming shellfish, most aquaculture farms in New Zealand are in the sea.
The main commercial species farmed in New Zealand are green lipped mussels and pacific oysters.
There are three oyster farms in the Bay of Plenty. They are all in the Ohiwa Harbour and are approximately two hectares each in size. The Ohiwa Oyster Farm is about 1km along Wainui Road, signposted on the harbour shoreline.
