The area immediately around Holker Hall is laid out with themed gardens and non-native trees planted with visual appeal in mind. The formal planting probably took place from 17 century onwards. To help with identification, small metal name tags have been hung on each tree.
"There is a small but ever growing national collection of Styracaceae at Holker. These are unusual and beautiful small trees or shrubs with white flowers and including Styrax, Pterostyrax, Sinojackia, Rehdrodendron, Huodendron, Melliodendron and the Snowdrop Tree Halesia.
Holker also boasts a great collection of large trees from the great Holker Lime to the massive leaved 'Turkey Oak' and the giant Wellingtonia, as well as horse chestnuts and a Monkey Puzzle grove. Smaller trees include unusual and beautiful cornus, Acers, Oxydendron arboretum and owner Lord Cavendish's favourite Magnolia macrophylla."
