Located in western Davison County, South Dakota, Mt. Vernon is a growing progressive community located twelve miles west of Mitchell, SD. Mount Vernon is one mile north of Interstate 90. The town is proud to be the home of one of the newest members of the Minnesota Vikings, Chad Greenway .
Mt. Vernon was originally called Arlanton named after the man who provided shelter for travelers who were on their way up the Fort Thompson trail. It became Mt. Vernon when the railroad pushed westward from Mitchell after 1881. The Post Office Department requested the change because Arlandton was too much like the already organized city of Arlington.
In 1888 there was an intense blizzard that caused several area deaths.
In 1889, a fire destroyed much of the town when 53 buildings burned to the ground and the remaining buildings were damaged.
The first official school opened in 1882.
Today the city has a Mayor/Councilman type of government with Steve Hohbach being the current Mayor.
