For most people, Valemount is a convenient place to stop when travelling from Vancouver to Edmonton. This is why we stopped and explored Valemount. We discovered much more than a truck stop, a town of significant geographical interest and history. Valemount, valley in the mountains, is just what the name implies. Three major valleys in the mountains cross here: the Rocky Mountain Trench, the Robson Valley, the Thompson valley. This minor hump in the Rocky Mountain trench is a crossroads for the three major rivers in British Columbia, the Columbia, the Fraser and the Thompson Rivers. One creek, just north of town is one of the sources of the Fraser River. The Canoe River just south flows into the Columbia at the Big Bend at Boat Encampment. The North Thompson River rises just west of Valemont at the Thompson Glacier in the Cariboo Mountains. It flows towards Valemont and then takes a sharp left to flow down the Thompson Valley between the Monashee and Cariboo Mountains. The Fraser goes down the Rocky Mountain to the north West. The Canoe River flows south east through the trench, originally to the Big Bend and Kinbasket Lake of the Columbia River. With the hydro dam on the Columbia at Mica Creek, the lake as McNaughton Lake now comes quite close to Valemount.

These rivers were the routes of the fur traders that explored the west and defined Canada as a nation. There is little information on this geography and history in the normal tourist sources. Take some time to explore the reality, the Valemount beyond the truck stop, hunting and fishing destination, the skidoo centre of the area.
