One of only 27 estuary refuges in the United States, this site is jointly maintained by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California State Parks system.
The site encompasses over 2,500 acres near the Mexican border (you can see the City of Tijuana from the Park.)
The Estuary serves as feeding & breeding grounds for many migratory birds. Over 370 species have been documented here.
The Refuge shelters several threatened and endangered species including the California Least Tern, Light-footed Clapper Rail, California Brown Pelican, Least's Bell Vireo, Belding's Savannah Sparrow, Western Snowy Plover & California Gnatcatcher.
In addition to being a great bird-watching area, the Park provides easy sets of trails - and you can ride your bike or bring your dog too.
The facility also is part of the National Estuarine Research Reserve System and is associated with the San Diego State University's Field Stations Program.

The Visitor's Center (which is maintained by the State Parks system) has a few dioramas of local wildlife and is focussed on providing lessons for children. The coordinates for this waymark refer to the Visitor's Center.
