North America has a headdress of pine cones and carries a spear and pine boughs in her hands. Africa has a lotus headdress and holds a lotus flower and a musical instrument. Asia holds a Buddha and a poppy. Europe has a fleur-de-lis headdress and holds a scepter and oak leaves.
The figures are by Henry Herring, a NY sculptor who did several other sculptures in Chicago. He replaced the symbols of the fine arts that adorned this building when it served the 1893 Columbian Exposition as the Palace of Fine Arts.

This is a great example of how the Smithsonian database and this waymarking category help us to see and understand more of what we usually just pass by (or underneath) without recognizing!
