"On Nov. 17, 1893, six local women met to form a private club they named "Philomathean" meaning love of learning. By 1910, members undertook to build a meeting place all their own. Local architect W.E. Wood donated the rustic craftman style design with decorative stained glass. Finished in 1912, the first meeting was held February 12.
