Forks of the Credit Provincial Park in Ontario Canada is host to an unusual truss bridge.
This bridge was constructed by members of the Canadian 2nd Field Engineer Regiment in the spring of 1999 as part of the "Bridges For Canada" Project, a three year co-operative effort between the Trans Canada Trail foundation and the Canadian Military Forces.
The early history of our nation saw military engineers contribute to the development of cities such as Halifax, Quebec City and Vancoiver. Military engineers later serviced Canada in the First and Second World Wars as well as during the Korean War, where they were responsible for road, airfield and camp consolidation, and bridging in particular.
Designed by Donald Bailey, this bridge is composed of strong, yet relatively light prefabricated steel trusses. Designed during World War 2, it was an instant success, and was adapted to a wide variety of needs. For handling extreme weights trusses could be doubled or trippled. For bridges over large waterways, water pontoons could be added to provide extra support. These bridges were used extensively in World War II as well as peacetime situations. Bailey, who died in 1985 was knighted in 1946 for his achievement.
