The Big Swamp was originally a land fill site until the 1970's. Prior to that the area had been used for market gardening and cattle grazing. Consequently an extensive revegetation program was needed. In 2002 the many islands were adopted by local groups and replanting took place. Today it is home to about 75 species of birds, including ducks, ibis, egrets, cormorants, coots, moorhens and darters. Visitors can also expect to see the black swan and pelican, as well as numerous types of honey eaters that visit the native plants surrounding the swamp. This is also the place to see the long necked turtle, the Western Banjo Frog and Western Tiger Snake.
Visitors have a variety of places that they can park around the swamp. There is a bitumen path running around the swamp which is wheelchair and stroller friendly. The access to the lookouts and hides are also wheelchair accessible.
