Long Description:
This is a F-104D Starfighter on display at George Izay Park in
Burbank, California near Burbank Airport. The F-104 was built by
Lockheed, who were formerly based in Burbank. (Lockheed has since
moved to Georgia.)
The F-104 was the first Mach-2 production jet and broke a number
of speed, altitude and climb records. The prototype plane was built
in 1954 and production models were built until 1979.
No serial number noted on this one. I believe this was a shell
built by Lockheed for the Burbank display and not a functional
plane or was a prototype D model. It bears Lockheed markings, not
military. I like the fact that it is displayed in accent
position.
