Not only is Point Lookout State Park in St. Mary's County, MD a popular camping and fishing spot, it is also popular with ghosts. Because of its Civil War history, past tragedies, and shipwrecks off its shores, soldiers, sailors, even a woman looking for a grave have been reported wandering around. Point Lookout was the former location of a Confederate POW camp and Union hospital and many died and were buried here. Although the graves were eventually moved, maybe one or two were forgotten or missed and the left-behind denizens are discombobulated and doomed to wander looking for their 'buddies'.
One of the most popular haunts of Point Lookout is the lighthouse at the southernmost tip. Voices have been recorded, seances have been held, and apparitions have been sighted. Some former residents of the lighthouse dispute ghostly claims and others claim they exist. To read about some of their ghostly encounters, see Legends of Point Lookout and Who's Afraid of Ghosts?.
The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1966, but real live people remained in residence until 1981. When they vacated the premises, the ghosts are believed to have stayed behind and remain the sole residents.
The lighthouse is located behind a fence at Point Lookout State Park. The interior and grounds are open to the public the first Saturday of the month, April through November (subject to change). Click here for more information. There is a fee to enter the park, but admission to the lighthouse is free when open.
The Point Lookout Lighthouse Preservation Society (PLLPS) hosts Paranormal Investigation Nights several nights a year that take place from 9 PM to 2 AM. Reservations are required and the fee is $50/person. A maximum of 10 people are allowed. See nighttimeinvestigations for schedule and details.
Meanwhile, be on the look out for a Confederate soldier in a 2nd floor bedroom or a sailor floating above the water trying to make it ashore from the shipwrecked Express. Wait! Was that someone in the basement?! Shhh... was that snoring coming from that cabinet?! Be afraid, be very afraid.
