Buck Buchanan was a native of Birmingham, Alabama, and upon graduation from A. H. Parker High School, he attended Grambling State University. At Grambling he became an All-American under the guidance of legendary Coach Eddie Robinson. In 1963, he was the first player taken in the American Football League Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. He went on to play in both the AFL and the National Football League where he played in 182 career games that included a string of 166 straight. He helped the Chief’s defeat the Minnesota Viking to win Super Bowl IV, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990. Buck Buchanan died of cancer on July 16, 1992, and is buried in the Mount Moriah Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri.

Junious “Buck” Buchanan was born on September 10, 1940 and attended A. H. Parker High School where he was an outstanding football and basketball player. After graduating high school Buck attended Grambling State University where he became an All-American under the legendary Coach Eddie Robinson. In 1963, the 6'7" 287 pound Buchanan was the first player selected overall in the AFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. Eddie Robinson called him "the finest lineman I have seen." Buchanan was the first black number one draft choice in Professional Football. He played in 182 career games that included a string of 166 straight and played in six AFL All-Star games and two AFC-NFC Pro Bowls. He led the Chiefs to victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV. Buck Buchanan was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1987 and into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990. Two years year’s later on July 16, 1992, Buck Buchanan passed away at the age of 51. Buck Buchanan is resting today in the Mount Moriah Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri.
