Nathaniel Bettes, a native of West Springfield, Massachusetts, moved to this area in 1810. This was Tallmadge Township at the time. Akron, which was incorporated in 1825, annexed this area in 1915. Bettes was given approximately 500 acres of land by the state of Massachusetts because of his service during the Revolutionary War. He fought as a “minuteman” at Lexington and at the siege of Boston. He entered the war as a private and after five years of service, was commissioned a captain late in 1779.
Captain Bettes was 63 years old when he moved to this area along with 20 members of his household. The family log home was just west of this cemetery. Captain Bettes and about sixty of his descendents are buried at this site. The last burials occurred during the 1940s.
