The Minuteman III (LGM 30) InterContinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) is the most advanced version of the Minuteman series of ICBMs which first came into service in 1962. As of 2009, it is the only land-based ICBM in service in the United States. The Minuteman III is a 3-stage, solid-fuel rocket that boosts its payload (a Mark 12 nuclear warhead) into space after which the warhead re-enters the atmosphere at the proper location in order to strike its designated target.
The USAF currently plans to continue to operate the Minuteman III until 2040.
Location restrictions: This display is located on a military instillation, but public access to the museum and the other static displays on base may be obtained by getting a pass at the Visitor Center located just outside the West Gate (assess from Powers Blvd.)
