There is a beautiful vertical declining sundial on a private residence just outside San Gimignano, Tuscany, Italy

We happened upon this sundials while exploring Tuscany. The sundial looks great. A large slab of Carara marble is carved to show hour lines and declination lines. This is a morning dial, declining to the east. The motto is "Sine Sole Sileo", Without the Sun I am Silent. The dial shows local solar time and an equation of time graph is included. The dial is dated and signed. The design information is given, Latitude, Longitude and Wall Declination. It is an excellent design....but not for this location.
We were staying in a gite across the road for a week and went past this dial several times a day. At first I thought the gnomon was wrong as the shadow did not come to the winter declination line. The hours were always wrong and it worked for a good part of the afternoon. The wall declination seems to be wrong. The design was based on 53° east. The wall actually faces about 17° east. The owner will have to move to a house facing the right way or turn the marble slab over and start again.
San Gimignano is an exellent place to visit. We enjoyed the town with all its towers and this was an ideal base for exploring Tuscany. Our gite had a fine view across a valley to the old town with all the towers.
