Traveling through Chicago along I-94 and the kids are restless? Shopping at Old Orchard Mall and, well, the kids are restless? Swing on by to Lawler Park to get that energy out of them.

While Old Orchard has a small playground inside it, Lawler Park has the advantage of 5.9 acres of mostly green space for the kids to run around in. Or, if they're feeling adventuresome, there's a big boat in which they can sail the seas. Complete with bike racks, slides, swings, and plenty of sand, this park is great for younger children.

Getting there is relatively easy. Don't believe the directions on the Skokie Park District site - they put the park south of Old Orchard, which is wrong. From I-94 (Edens Expressway), get off at Exit 35 (Old Orchard Rd) going east. You can either then turn left (north) at Lawler Ave/Frontage Rd or one block later at Lavergne Ave - there are stop lights at both intersections, and they're right east of the expressway. Coming from Old Orchard Mall, you'll want to exit the Mall parking lot near the Bloomingdale's near the Shell station. Where everyone will be turning left or right, you can go straightish, continuing onto Lavergne.

Parking is available along the Frontage Road in the gravely area, or along Lavergne, although it might be scarcer during Little League games.
