Arlesheim was the Seat of the Cathedral chapter of Basel from 1679 to 1792. After reformation of the town Basel in 1529 the chapter was located in Fraiburg im Breisgau until 1679, it remained here until the French revolution. After a period when it was not used, it became the parish church of Arlesheim in 1812.
The cathedral was built 1679-1681 by architect Franz Demess. In 1759 an organ of Johann Andreas Silbermann was aquired, it is the last working Silbermann organ in Switzerland, it can be heard on several record of classical organ music.
