First introduced by Theodor Geisel in a 1954 issue of Life (magazine), the beloved and mischievous Cat in the Hat character gained immense popularity after the 1957 release of the Dr. Seuss book "The Cat in the Hat" and the 1958 follow-up "The Cat in the Hat Comes Back".
Today, the book remains one of the most popular and widely read "early learning" books in America. The book itself was the result of an effort by the author to develop a piece of children's literature that featured a limited vocabulary - there are only 236 unique words in the book.
The Cat in the Hat character has since appeared in numerous books, stories, film, and stage productions.
Appearing next to The Cat in the Hat in this sculpture is a seated version of Theodor Geisel working at his desk.
This sculpture, along with three other popular sculptures based on the work of Dr. Seuss, is located in the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden (
